Frequently asked questions

Do I need dance experience?

Not at all. Hips & Giggles and the upcoming beginner classes are designed for complete beginners. We will start at the beginning and explain what we are doing.

Do I need to be flexible or coordinated?

No. Flexibility, rhythm, and coordination are not prerequisites. They are skills that can improve through practice.

Am I too old to start belly dance?

No. You are not too old to begin. Classes are designed for adults with different bodies, backgrounds, and levels of movement experience.

Am I too fat to belly dance?

No. There is no weight limit for belly dance.

You do not need to lose weight, change your shape, or wait until your body looks different before you begin. Bring the body you have. We will work with that one.

Can belly dance help with weight loss?

Belly dance can support weight loss goals by adding enjoyable movement, improving consistency, and helping build strength, stamina, coordination, and body awareness.

It is a low-impact, full-body activity, but no single class or type of exercise guarantees weight loss. Nutrition, overall activity, sleep, health, and consistency all play a role.

Weight loss is never required to participate. Future online fitness and weight loss programs will also be available for dancers who want more structured support.

Is Belly Dance Practice Studio LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes. LGBTQ+ students are welcome here.

Trans women are women, and nonbinary students who feel comfortable in a women-centered space are welcome.

Respectful students of all genders are welcome in regular classes. Individual workshops and events, such as Hips & Giggles, may be described as women-centered depending on the event.

Belly Dance Practice Studio is committed to creating a respectful, welcoming environment where people can learn without having to defend who they are, explain themselves, or fit someone else’s idea of what a dancer should look like.

Disrespectful or discriminatory behavior toward another student will not be tolerated.

Can men attend classes?

Yes. Male belly dancers are absolutely a real thing, and respectful male students are welcome in regular classes.

Hips & Giggles is currently presented as a Girls Night Out event. Details about eligibility for individual workshops will always be included in that event’s description.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

Leggings, yoga pants, workout clothes, a fitted T-shirt, or similar clothing are all fine. Avoid extremely baggy clothing so you can move safely and see what your body is doing.

You do not have to show your belly. Hip scarves are optional.

What should I wear on my feet?

Most students and the instructor dance barefoot.

Ballet slippers, jazz shoes, or securely fitted dance sandals are also welcome. Please do not wear socks during the movement portion because they do not provide the correct traction.

Will I have to perform?

Nope.

You may learn combinations or choreography during class, but public performance is always optional. You do not need performance ambitions to belong here.

Can I come alone?

Absolutely. You are welcome to come alone or bring friends. You will not be the only person arriving nervous.

Can I drop into a regular class?

Usually, no.

Beginner classes are structured as a progressive session, so each week builds on what was taught previously. This helps students feel less lost and gives the group time to become comfortable together.

Hips & Giggles and other workshops are the best options for trying a single event.

Experienced dancers visiting the area may contact hello@bellydancepracticestudio.com to ask whether a drop-in is appropriate for a particular class.

Can people watch the class?

No. Classes are closed to observers.

This protects students’ privacy and helps create a comfortable environment where people can learn without feeling watched. Parents or guardians participating with younger students are welcome.

Can teenagers attend?

Students age 15 and older may attend without a parent or guardian participating. Students under 18 will still need parent or guardian permission.

Students age 12 to 14 may attend when a parent or guardian is also registered and participating.

Is Hips & Giggles a workout?

You will be moving, and you may feel it, but Hips & Giggles is designed as a fun beginner experience rather than an intense workout.

Move at a level that feels comfortable for you.

Do I have to show my belly?

Absolutely not.

A comfortable shirt, tank top, or workout top is fine. Showing your belly is always optional.
